I enjoy reading books. The genres I pick vary from technical, biographies, fictional novels to graphic based memoirs. I used to buy books from amazon. But now, because of my travel I can’t buy hard copies as I can’t carry them with me. So, I switched to e-books and starting reading on kindle.
After switching to ebooks, I started looking for portals and websites where I can find ebooks for low price. I used to have discussions about the books I read with my friend who lives in the US. He suggested to look for any public libraries in the city and whether they lend books through overdrive book lending service/software.
Lucky enough, Auckland library does that. So, I started reading books by borrowing from Auckland city library (lot of savings!!!). One problem with Overdrive or Libby app is you can’t send the borrowed files to kindle if you are outside of US. The option I’m left with is mobile phone reading. I compromised on it because of the cost saving.
There was another issue that started bothering me, especially when reading the technical books. When I wanted to test any code snippet from the book or any command, I can’t copy that from phone and use on my laptop. So, I started looking for alternatives.
Then I found that overdrive supports Adobe Digital Editions(ADE). All you have to do is authorise ADE by following the steps mentioned in this link using overdrive credentials. Once you authorise, login to the library overdrive account in the browser and down the book you borrowed. A file with .acsm will be downloaded, open the file in ADE and enjoy the reading!! 😉
