ME on Women’s Day

It’s a long day at work, overloaded with a lot of technical discussions. I’m physically and mentally drained now. I just want to go home as soon as I can and get some rest. The clock is taking ages to hit 6 PM. I can’t focus anymore on the tasks at hand. Just to pass the time, I started going through the email updates from HR team. I found one mail interesting, the title said “Women’s day talk by Dr. Mamatha”. I clicked on the mail and the mail body said..

As part of the women’s day celebration, we are hosting a talk and the guest is Dr. Mamatha G. She is an orthopedic by profession and a feminist by choice. She co-founded Jagruthi Foundation, which helps girls from poor communities to finish their graduation by providing financial aid.

You can attend the talk using the zoom link here. The session is on 8th March at 5 PM.

I looked at my smartwatch, its been 5 mins since the session has started. I always had an interest in the topics related to women empowerment, listening to the stories of successful women and talks about feminism. So, it felt like I should be attending the session. I quickly grabbed my headset and clicked on the zoom link to join the session.

Our HR was introducing Dr.Mamatha and I didn’t grasp what she said, by the time I settled down with microphone muted, audio output, and volume adjustments, the HR handed the microphone to the guest. The guest for the next half an hour talked about various topics ranging from the importance of gender equality in society, the importance of education for girls, and how it will impact the gender balance in work environments and its impact on the overall economy.

It was fascinating to hear all the talk, I got motivated and I decided to do something for the Jagruthi foundation. It doesn’t have to be big, just a small donation. I felt I should discuss this with Vanitha after going home. I drove home with all these thoughts wandering in my head.

I opened the flat door, it was dark. I turned on the lights of the living room and my sight at the couch remained me about the long hectic day at work. I threw the laptop bag on one end of the couch and sat on the other end. I took out my phone and started browsing about the Jagruthi foundation. I was deep in my thoughts, suddenly heard a noise of the door opening and looked at the main door. It was Vanitha with a red rose in her right hand and laptop bag hanging on her left shoulder, she looked excited.

She looked at me and started raving about the women’s day celebrations at work. She said that all the women at work were surprised to see a red rose and a greeting card placed on their work desks. I asked her to sit on the couch and said that it great hear that. I also told her about the talk at my workplace and expressed my interest in donating to the foundation. She didn’t even think about it for a second and happily agreed to it.

We had chat about the day at work. Vanitha mentioned that it was a busy day for her too. We continued the chat for about 15 minutes and both started feeling hungry. I asked Vanitha to prepare some food. She raised from the couch and walked into the kitchen saying that curries are already there in the refrigerator and she just has to prepare the rice. Dinner was ready in less than 20 mins and we both enjoyed our dinner. I went into the bedroom when Vanitha started cleaning up the dishes.

I have a habit of looking at the next day’s calendar events before going to bed. So, grabbed my phone and realised that I have an early meeting at 8:00 AM the next day. Vanitha joined me after some time in the bedroom and I asked her whether she would be able to prepare breakfast and lunchbox 30 mins earlier than usual as I got an early meeting. She said it’s not a big deal and can prepare before I leave for work.

The next day, at 7:00 AM, I woke and was brushing my teeth in the washroom. Vanitha came and told that the breakfast and lunchbox are on the dining table, her cab to work has arrived and she is leaving. I wished her a good day started doing my morning chores.

I had my breakfast, grabbed the lunchbox, and rushed to my car as I was running late to the 8:00 AM meeting. As I entered the car and started driving, all those thoughts of women’s education, equality, and women empowerment started coming back again in my head. I decided to make a 10,000 donation to the trust.

Hey, I’ve to say bye for now to attend this meeting. See you again.. Ahh.. looks like I bothered you with all my thoughts even without telling who am I.. I’m a desi common man.. Everyone likes to call me “AAM AADMI” 🙂
